A bit of History
The beautiful park in Alt Madlitz, which stretches behind the manor house with its large oak trees, mighty chestnut trees and cleverly designed visual axes, is the oldest English landscape park (from 1772) in Brandenburg.
Created by created by Friedrich Ludwig Karl Finck von Finckenstein. the step grandfather of Benedikt
His love for the park was so great that he had his heart buried there, surrounded by thirteen fieldstones representing the number of his children.
The Finckensteins originally came from East Prussia and only came to the area through Field Marshal Albrecht Konrad von Finckenstein (1660-1735). Because of his military merits in the War of the Spanish Succession, he was elevated to the status of Imperial Count by the Emperor in 1710. Although he built the baroque Finckenstein Palace in East Prussia, he stayed in Berlin in later years as he was tutor to the crown princes and later kings of Friedrich Wilhelm I and Friedrich II.
It was only his son, Friedrich Ludwig Karl (1745-1818), who made Madlitz his permanent place of residence and an important site for the cultural and art history of the Mark. He settled here with his large family and managed, modernized and beautified his estates, promoted artists and scientists and devoted himself to landscape and garden design, poetry and music.
Alt Madlitz became the court of the Muses, frequented by many well-known people - Ludwig Tieck, Achim von Arnim, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Clemens Brentano and Ewald von Kleist
Once again Alt Madlitz has become a place of innovation and creation for other reasons, but it is thanks to the restoration of Cornelie Bösel who brought the park back from total destitution, after the reunification of Germany in the 90s that we can enjoy it in all its beauty today.
